André Rieu, Dutch violinist, conductor & entertainer dubbed ‘The King of the Waltz’ by media, is the world’s leading pop classical artist and one of the world’s biggest touring artists.
Over the past three decades, multi award-winning musician André Rieu has made his global mark as a violinist, conductor and entrepreneur. In 1987, he founded the 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra, which has toured extensively around the world with spectacular productions, rivalled only by the world’s largest pop and rock bands in size and scale. His Johann Strauss Orchestra is the biggest private orchestra in the world.
André Rieu’s concerts draw a global audience of over 600,000 people each year. He has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and has 500 Platinum & 270 Gold Awards. Since 2008, Rieu’s concerts have been consistently rated in Billboard Magazine’s worldwide Top 25 Tours lists. André Rieu has more 4 million Facebook friends, 1,3+ mio YouTube Channel subscribers and 230.000+ Instagram followers.
Waltzes have starred in André’s work ever since. From a Champions League football match at Amsterdam stadium in 1995, when André filled the half-time interval with the performance of a classic waltz, to his Maastricht concerts of 2011, where André premiered ‘And The Waltz Goes On’, composed by Oscarâ-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. André has composed many waltzes and since 1987, he and his Johann Strauss Orchestra have been delighting audiences all over the world with their magnificent renditions of classic waltzes.
On stage André’s incredible musical prowess, passion and charisma make for a magical spectacle. His romantic and fun shows are the only ones where people regularly jump to their feet and dance in the aisles. It’s not uncommon to see devoted fans laughing, weeping, clapping, dancing and embracing when they listen to the orchestra and André’s precious Stradivarius violin from 1732; his shows are a perfect mix of thrilling, romantic, festive and emotional melodies combined with surprises, balloons, beautiful soloists and of course André’s great sense of humor.
Among others, André Rieu received three Classic Brit Awards for Album of the Year, Gramophone Award, the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Grand Decoration of Honour for services to the Republic of Austria for being an Ambassador od Strauss’ waltzes around the world.
He has been married for over 40 years and lives with his wife Marjorie in a historic castle, built in 1452 in his hometown of Maastricht/Netherlands. The couple has two sons and five grandchildren.
