- Biography
As part of Top Dawg Entertainment’s eclectic crew of spitters, ScHoolboy Q is a rowdy voice in the new generation of West Coast rappers. With a steady mix of radio anthems and more introspective hits, Q has become one of the most exciting voices of the last decade. Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, Q was an accomplished football player in high school and college. His academic prowess juxtaposed the street life he had become entrenched in, a culture that Q speaks about heavily in his music. The duality between the streets and his school life gave him an interesting angle on the rap scene; he released his first mixtape ScHoolboy Turned Hustla in 2008 and Gangsta & Soul in 2009. In 2011, his first independent album Setbacks was released under TDE. After signing with Interscope Records, he released his debut studio album Oxymoron, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the GRAMMYs. Q remains one of the most critically acclaimed rappers in the game now and has continued his streak of hits with his 2016 album Blank Face LP, which was also nominated for Best Rap Album at the GRAMMYs in 2017.
