Bronx-by-way-of-London MC, Slick Rick or Richard Martin Lloyd Walters began his career after joining Doug E. Fresh’s Get Fresh Crew under the MC Ricky D. After being featured on the single “The Show” and its even more popular B-side, “La Di Da Di” he gained the attention of Russell Simmons’ Rush Artist Management and became the third artist signed to Def Jam Records. Under a new name, Slick Rick released his solo debut, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, in 1988 on Def Jam. “Children’s Story,” “Hey Young World,” and “Teenage Love” helped Rick secure the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart. The critical and commercial success of his debut album helped him establish himself as one of the architects of hip-hop. Over the course of his career, Slick released four albums lauded for their unique storytelling and vocal characterizations. He is also one of the most widely sampled and referenced rappers alive and the most successful British-American rapper in music history.
